Guess the word on the basis of a simple definition....to learn English

 

GUESS THE WORD

TEAM A and TEAM B

The students try to give another  student belonging to their same team the right definition of a word.

When the students guesses the word, their team gets a score.

After having guessed at least five definitions one of the teams wins.

That is a good game to revise verbs,words and adjectives.

A game helping students speak English

A game helping students speak using English even when their level is the beginning one.
The students in the FIRST CLASS are divided into two groups and are asked to stand into two rows. They create two "queues". Each student has to answer a question or translate a sentence and if he/she fails he/she is  out, while if the answer is right (from the grammar point of view and from the point of view of coherence) he/she goes back behind the row related to his/her group.
Positive points- they improve their listening skills and their ability to answer a question properly.

The group having the last student left wins the game.

Questions for students in the first class- focus on  to be, What do you look like?,What's the weather like? and adjectives of nationality.

About one month ago, one of my English colleagues, the English conversation teacher and I had students from two classes, (one from Liceo Linguistico and one from Liceo Scientifico) do an English activity, whose inspiration was taken from an Italian TV programme, " Per un pugno di libri".

The activity came from the idea of a possible activity that students from two different classes could do together (Parallel Class).

So the students were divided into two groups and were asked to stand into two rows. They created two "queues". Each student had to answer a question or translate a sentence and if he/she failed he/she was out, while if the answer was right (from the grammar point of view and from the point of view of coherence) he/she went back behind the row related to his/her group.

The group having the last student left won the game.
These are the questions we asked for:

Two queues and lots of questions.

An involving, rousing,  noisy speaking activity.....but it's worth while...

This morning students in the second class did an activity which turned to be very successful. I got inspiration from a game I saw on TV a few days ago.

They were divided in two groups and were asked to stand in two rows. They created two queues. Each student had to answer a question or translate a sentence and if he/she failed he/she was out, while if the answer was right he/she went back behind all the students of the row in  his/her group.

The group having the last student left won the game.

There was a real competition and they seemed to be really interested and enthusiastic. It was a good activity from the didactic point of view. They paid great attention to the other students' answers……!!!!sometimes even better than me!

A game to consolidate words related to personality

In groups students create posters on the topic What makes a good friend or classmate?

After about 30 minutes each group will present their posters and they will create a wall display.

They will write an essay on the same topic.

A real fun game!

On the first day I had my English lesson in a second class, after Christmas holidays the students were asked to do the following activity.

I told them to write a sentence on a sheet of paper about something they had done or hadn't done during their Christmas holidays, using the Present Perfect.

Then I asked them to make a small ball of each paper and to throw them away to the other classmates.

The thing was really enjoyable...they went on throwing the paper balls ( while music was going on) till I told them to stop.

After being sure that everyone had a paper ball, each student was invited to read the sentence and the others were asked to guess who had written that sentence.
Of course,they had a great time.....and I had the opportunity to make them consolidate some past participle forms. They also learned new expressions and words.

A game to revise Present Perfect Simple and Present Perfect Continuous


The class was divided into two teams and I dictated them ten short sentences to be translated into English giving them 20 seconds to write them. Then I gave them some extra time to revise the sentences and be quite sure about the final version of the sentences.
Each team got one point for every right sentence. At the end, of course there was a team which won the competition.
The activity was far more interesting and fun than an ordinary translation made by each student working on his/her own. They also seemed to be more focused on the mistakes.

Consolidation games

A game to get started after the Christmas break to  revise the vocabulary related to music and entertainment.

I've realized recently that one of the main challenges for an English teacher is to make  students to learn words and use them properly.

It's much easier to teach grammar...but words? After all,  in some situations, words are more important than grammar to be understood.

As a result, over the last months I've been trying to do lessons where the center of interest or of the activity done is vocabulary.

However ...there's a problem.... what about the students' involvement and their easily getting bored?

So yesterday I divided the class into teams and I dictated the students the definitions of some of the words related to music and entertainment they should know, as we have paid a particular attention on them recently.

There's no need to say that I realized that I had taken lots of things for granted. It wasn't so easy to write the right words and in some cases to write the words using the right spelling.
Anyway, while doing the activity, time flew off quickly and students had a good time.

These are the definitions I dictated:

1. A person who performs music in a public place to get money from people walking past (Busker)
2. to make a Cd or a movie available for people to buy or see (Release)
3. The people who sit and watch a performance at a theatre, cinema... (Audience)
4. the words of a song (Lyrics)
5. The raised area in a theatre where actors perform (Stage)
6. In a gradual, regular rate (Steadily)
7. A natural ability to do something (Talent)
8. A large musical instrument with strings inside and black and white bars that produce sounds when you press them (Piano)
9. To copy computer programs, music or other information electronically using the Internet (Download)
10. An informal word to refer to a performance of pop or rock music (Gig)
11. A collection of songs (Album)
12. A person whose job is to find talented musicians and singers (Talent Scout)
13. A gig or a concert in front of an audience (Performance)
14. A metal musical instrument that you play by blowing into it and pressing buttons to make different notes (Trumpet)

ICEBREAKER First lesson

An activity which always works with students you don't know.
Also this year my students in the first class have done the following activity.
I give them a mind map with some words about me.
The words are the answers I could give them if they ask me the "right question".

Each student gets a paper with some sentences to be completed. He/She chooses just three sentences. The students  stand up in a circle. Each of them has to remember the three sentences chosen by the student on his/her right. Then each student says the three sentences in a loud voice. All the students write at least one sentence on another sheet of paper with all their names. Students improve their listening, speaking and writing skills.
