A song to learn sound devices and figures of speech


 Figures of Speech
  • Personification: "Who kicked a hole in the sky / So the heavens would cry over me?"

  • Idiom / Visual Metaphor: "In a world come undone at the seams"

  • Metaphor: "As you sail up your heavenly stream"

  • Synecdoche: "Shake up your tired eyes"

Sound Devices

  • Anaphora (Repetition): "Let there be love" (repeated across choruses and outro)

  • Alliteration:

    • /s/ sound: "Who stole the soul from the sun"

    • /w/ sound: "The world is waiting for you"

  • Assonance:

    • Long /oʊ/ sound: "Who stole the soul"

    • Long /aɪ/ sound: "sky / So the heavens would cry"

  • Consonance (Sibilance): Repetition of /s/ sounds (sky, heavens, stole, soul, sun, seams)
