10 Simple Questions about Brave New World

10 Simple Questions

  1. Soma vs. Modern Escapes: Citizens in the book use Soma to feel happy. What do people today use to escape stress or sadness? (ideas....superficial happiness, digital distraction, or instant gratification over dealing with complex, authentic emotions) (antidepressants, recreational drugs, alcohol, and digital addictions -gaming, scrolling function like modern-day Soma?)

  2. Consumerism: The book preaches "Ending is better than mending." Do we throw away technology and clothes too easily today? fast fashion, planned obsolescence, and consumer culture

  3. Social Media & Privacy: In the novel, people have zero privacy. Are we giving up our privacy on social media today? hyper-connectivity, and the constant public sharing of our private lives

  4.  Instant Gratification: Characters in Brave New World get everything they want instantly. Has technology made us too impatient?

  5. Gene Editing: Babies in the story are genetically designed in labs. Should parents today be allowed to choose their baby’s traits?

  6. Short Attention Spans: High literature and history are banned because they are "too difficult." Are people today losing interest in long books and deep thinking? Is short-form content changing how we engage with complex ideas?

  7. Social Media Conditioning: Children are conditioned through repetition while sleeping. How do modern algorithms and phone apps condition us today? How do modern algorithms, media trends, and societal expectations subtly condition people to conform today, even when we believe we have free choice?

  8. Freedom vs. Comfort: Would you give up some personal freedom if it guaranteed you would always be comfortable and safe? In what ways do contemporary governments or societies trade personal privacy, freedom of speech, or civil liberties in exchange for security, safety, and convenience?

  9. Dating & Relationships: Relationships in the novel are quick and casual with no commitment. Are modern dating apps making relationships more like this?

  10. Huxley vs. Reality: Is our world today becoming more like Brave New World (controlled by pleasure) or 1984 (controlled by fear)?
